Stavanger and the Pulpit Rock Hike (Preikestolen)
Start your day with one of Norway’s most unforgettable adventures — a hike to the legendary Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen), towering 604 meters above the Lysefjord. This dramatic cliff is among the country’s most photographed natural wonders and a must-visit for active travelers.
After meeting your guide at your hotel, the cruise port, or another agreed location, you’ll begin your adventure in Norwegian landscapes and travel by car to the Pulpit Rock area. The drive to the trailhead takes only about 40–50 minutes. From there, in the company of your guide, you’ll start your hike to one of Norway’s most famous natural attractions.
The rocky mountain trail will lead you through forested paths, weaving between trees and opening up to breathtaking views of a picturesque lake far below. Overcoming ascents and descents, stone steps, and wooden walkways, you’ll cover about 4 km and gain 500 meters in elevation. After 1.5–2.5 hours, you’ll reach your final destination — the legendary Pulpit Rock.
This flat, square cliff, majestically rising 604 meters above the Lysefjord, truly resembles a giant pulpit. Every year, more than 300,000 active travelers make this climb. Once at the top, you’ll understand why. Below — the calm, deep-blue waters of the Lysefjord; above — endless sky (hopefully blue!); and within — the feeling of infinity and freedom. Take your time to fully enjoy the moment.
Your guide will be with you every step of the way, offering tips for a comfortable climb, pointing out great spots for rest and photos, and sharing fascinating stories about Norway and its traditions.
The descent takes about 1.5–2 hours. Upon returning to the trailhead, you’ll have the chance to relax and try traditional Norwegian dishes at a local café. You’ll then return to Stavanger (40–50 minutes, 40 km).
If time allows, your day will end with a short (30-minute) guided walk in Stavanger city center, including the Gamle Stavanger district and the harbour.
If you’d like to explore more of Stavanger in depth, you can extend your experience with a full city tour.
