Trondheim city walk: From Vikings to the Present Day
Trondheim is Norway’s third-largest city, where every step through its streets breathes history, and its vibrant cultural life is impossible to miss! Living history, stunning nature, striking architecture, and an authentic Scandinavian spirit — all of this awaits you in Trondheim.
Your city tour begins with a meeting with your guide in the lobby of your hotel or at another pre-arranged location. Together with an experienced guide, you’ll stroll through the charming old streets of the city and feel as though you’ve stepped back in time — to the age of Vikings and kings. Along the way, you'll follow in the footsteps of the city’s legendary founder, King Olaf Tryggvason. His bronze statue stands tall at the city’s central square — not just a monument, but also a giant sundial. Founded in the year 997, Trondheim has been a lively and spirited city ever since, filled with the essence of the North.
One of the highlights of the tour is the majestic Nidaros Cathedral — the northernmost Gothic cathedral in the world and the traditional coronation site of Norwegian monarchs. Its massive stone walls, soaring arches, intricate sculptures, and famous rose window are sure to leave a lasting impression. Once a major pilgrimage site rivaling Santiago de Compostela, Nidaros still holds deep spiritual and historical significance. If you wish, you can step inside the cathedral to admire its detailed interior and even descend into the archaeological chambers with rare historic artifacts (optional visit).
The tour continues with a visit to the Archbishop’s Palace (Erkebispegården), built around 1160. It is the oldest secular building in all of Scandinavia. Inside, you’ll find the Norwegian royal regalia, and the palace itself holds a quiet, mysterious medieval atmosphere that speaks to centuries past (optional visit).
Just a short walk away stands Stiftsgården, one of the largest wooden palaces in Northern Europe and still used as the royal family's summer residence. If you choose, you can take an inside tour — who knows, maybe the king himself is at home! (optional visit).
Your walk continues through the scenic streets of Trondheim’s old town, where your guide will share local legends, curious facts, and hidden stories. This is more than just sightseeing — it’s a way to truly feel the soul of the city.
You’ll then cross the charming Gamle Bybro — known as the “Gate of Happiness” — a historic bridge over the Nidelva River. Locals say that anyone who crosses it with a smile will become just a little bit happier. And it’s hard not to smile here: the view is magical — rows of colorful old wooden warehouses on stilts lining the river, with quaint bridges adding to the romantic charm. No wonder Trondheim is sometimes called the "Venice of Norway." Be sure to take a photo and maybe pop into a cozy café nearby for a coffee.
After a short rest, follow your guide uphill to the Kristiansten Fortress, a 17th-century fort offering a spectacular panoramic view of the city and the surrounding fjord. Here, you'll also learn about Trondheim’s military past, including its strategic role during World War II, when the city was occupied and used as a base for German submarines. The tour also touches on modern Trondheim — a vibrant student city and home to Norway’s largest university.
Trondheim offers a unique blend of living history, stunning natural landscapes, beautiful architecture, and authentic Scandinavian spirit. Come and experience it for yourself!
