Ålesund: The Town on the Islands. Walking Tour, 3 hours
Extended version of the Ålesund city tour
Once, in the dark of night, a fire broke out in a quiet northern town on the edge of the cold Atlantic. By morning, the city lay in ashes — only ruins remained. According to legend, just one house survived the flames — and you'll see it on this tour. Alongside it, you'll discover stunning architecture and charming streets, for the city rose from the ashes and was rebuilt by young architects in the stylish Art Nouveau fashion of the time.
Welcome to Ålesund — a city that captivates from the very first steps!
That tragic fire marked the beginning of a new era in Ålesund’s history — the birth of an architectural gem. In less than a decade, the entire city was rebuilt — this time in stone, in the cutting-edge Art Nouveau style (or “Nordic Jugendstil”), then considered the height of modernity.
Your tour begins with a walk through the historic city center. Strolling along Kongensgate, Ålesund’s main street, you’ll see ornate facades where every detail tells a story — elegant stone buildings with turrets, wrought-iron balconies, floral mosaics, and whimsical sculptures.
You’ll explore hidden courtyards, pass scenic canals and waterfront promenades, and hear fascinating stories and local legends from your guide. If you wish, you may also visit Ålesund Church — an elegant stone church with stained glass windows and a serene Art Nouveau interior.
The route continues through the city park, home to exotic trees including rare Araucarias, and to a striking monument to Rollo — the legendary Viking who sailed to France and founded Normandy around 911 AD. From there, you’ll ascend to Mount Aksla, where a breathtaking panorama opens up: Ålesund’s islands stretch below you, framed by the dramatic Sunnmøre Alps that fade into the horizon. It’s one of the most spectacular viewpoints along the Norwegian coast.
To end the tour, you’ll unwind at a cozy café overlooking the harbour — the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood or a cup of coffee while watching the reflections of Art Nouveau facades shimmer on the water’s surface.
